The Characters of Christmas
The Characters of Christmas
6 Sermons | December 3, 2023-January 7, 2024
We're all used to seeing Nativity scenes at Christmas. But we've become so familiar with seeing little figurines of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men that we forget they were real people with real problems.
So this Christmas, we'll be exploring the stories of some of the characters of Christmas to see how Jesus' arrival changed their lives forever.
Sermon 1
Zechariah
December 3, 2023
Have you ever had a Christmas where you got everything you put on your list and still felt disappointed? In the story of the first Christmas, we meet a man named Zechariah who seemed to have everything he could ever want...but his life was still missing something.
By taking a closer look at his story, we can find what we all really need this Christmas.
Sermon 2
Mary
December 10, 2023
In the busyness of Christmas, peace can feel elusive. That was definitely the case for Mary. When she found out that she was pregnant with Jesus, her life was turned upside down.
But through Mary's story we're reminded that no matter how chaotic life can be, we’re never alone. Even when our lives feel upside down, God is with us.
Sermon 3
Joseph
December 17, 2023
We've all had times when it felt like our dreams turned into nightmares. And that was definitely the case for Joseph. Joseph dreamed of getting married and starting a family, but his dream was shattered when he found out his fiance was pregnant.
But even though his dreams were shattered, Joseph realized that God was still with him. And that God would take his broken dreams and turn them into something beautiful.
Sermon 4
Jesus
December 24, 2023
When we look at a nativity scene, far too often we only see another Christmas decoration. But each of those figurines we place around a manger represents a real person...and that includes the baby in the manger.
Jesus was born into the real world with real problems. So on that first Christmas Day, God truly became one of us knowing what it means to be human so nothing can separate us from him.
Sermon 5
The Shepherds
December 31, 2023
The first people to hear the good news that the son of God had been born weren't kings or queens, emperors or rulers, or even priests or religious leaders. The first people to hear the good news that Jesus was born were ordinary shepherds.
But why were the shepherds the first to hear the news? It's because God wants us to know that God loves every one of us.
Sermon 6
The Wise Men
January 7, 2024
By the time January rolls around, most of us are ready to put Christmas behind us. We're worn out from wrapping presents, planning get-togethers, and attending special programs. But if all we focus on after Christmas ends is how busy we've been, we miss the point of Christmas.
But the story of the wise men, which happens years after Jesus was born, reminds us of what Christmas is really about...God becoming one of us.
